If you’ve lost most of your teeth and are getting ready to receive dentures in Venice, FL, you are in luck! You will soon enjoy greater dental functionality and an improved appearance. Once your dentures have been placed by an experienced dentist, it is important to take good care of them if you want them to last. Here are a few things you need to know about proper denture care.

Special Cleaners Are Required

Plaque and food can build up on dentures just like they do on regular teeth, so daily brushing is imperative. However, some toothpastes are too abrasive for dentures and can cause damage. For this reason, it is recommended that you brush your denture appliances with special cleaners that carry the American Dental Association (ADA) Seal of Acceptance. There are also ultrasonic cleaners available that can remove food particles from your dentures with gentle sound waves. Just keep in mind that ultrasonic cleaners should not replace daily brushing but can be used to augment your regular cleaning routine.

Dentures Must Be Carefully Handled

To keep your denture appliances in good condition, handle them carefully and take proper care of them even when you are not wearing them. Here are a few things you can do to care for your dentures when they are not in your mouth:

  • Place them in cold water or a denture cleanser soaking solution to keep them from drying out and losing their shape.
  • Avoid placing them in hot water, which can cause them to warp.
  • Attend follow-up appointments to have your dentures adjusted if necessary.

Keep in mind that some soaking solutions can tarnish metal, so if your dentures come with metal appliances, ask your dentist how to keep them moist without damaging them.
