Porcelain veneers are thin, porcelain shells that are used to cover existing teeth, and they can give you the perfect, polished smile that you have been dreaming of. Here are the four most commonly asked questions from patients considering veneers.

  1. What Are Veneers Used For?

Veneers can help transform your smile in just one simple procedure, with no braces or surgery required. Veneers can be used to help solve many cosmetic dental problems, such as:

  • Teeth with permanent stains
  • Fill in gaps between teeth
  • Teeth that show evident wear and tear or worn enamel
  • Uneven or dissimilar teeth
  1. How Are Veneers Attached?

Porcelain veneers require that ½ millimeter of your tooth enamel is removed. Impressions are taken of your teeth after the ½ millimeter is removed, and veneers are designed based upon these impressions. In a later visit, once your teeth have been thoroughly cleaned and etched (in order for the veneers to adhere better), the veneers are attached with dental cement and sealed with a laser.

  1. How Can I Maintain My Veneers?

Although the fact that your veneers are crafted from porcelain may make them sound brittle, they are rather strong and can perform the same functions as regular teeth. However, you should take care to avoid stressing your veneers by using your teeth in ways that could crack the laminate, such as cracking nutshells and chewing on bones. If veneers do become cracked or damaged, they can be re-bonded or replaced.

  1. How Long Can They Last?

Veneers are designed to last anywhere from seven to twenty years as long as they are properly taken care of. You should brush and floss regularly, using a fluoride-based non-abrasive toothpaste, and schedule regular cleanings and dental checkups.
