June 15, 2018

June is National Candy Month, which means a lot of candy promoters and sweet treat bakers are going to be making sure you know about it! Before you go out to sample all the confections in your local area, make sure you’re staying on top of your oral hygiene so that you don’t have to worry about tooth decay from the celebration. A little prevention and moderation in your approach to this month can go a long way.

Sugar Increases Tooth Decay

It’s worth remembering this fact. Sweets will increase the rate of tooth decay by making your mouth into an environment where bacteria have an easier time breeding. This leads to PH changes, and the only way to totally prevent it is to avoid overindulgence in sweets. There are ways too minimize the impact, though, and if you’re going to enjoy yourself during National Candy Month, here’s how you can do it:

  • Avoid grazing on sweets. The longer you expose your mouth to sugar, the more damage can be done. Have short snacking periods with long breaks.
  • Brush your teeth or use mouthwash immediately after you’re done eating. This helps cleanse your mouth and return it to its natural state, cutting down on the time sugars can linger after you eat.
  • Floss regularly to make sure you are cleaning between teeth.
  • Remember to make an appointment for your six month cleaning on time.
