With all the listings for dentists, making an educated choice can seem daunting. However, there are certain questions you can ask yourself and others in order to find one that will best suit your needs.
What to Look for in a Dentist
Dentists and dental offices all have different characteristics, specialties and services. When looking for a dentist, you will want to consider the following:
- If you can easily get to the office from either home or work.
- What the office hours are and if they work well with your schedule.
- If the dentist uses preventive dentistry.
- If the dentist attends workshops for continuing education and attends conferences.
- Where the dentist received his or her training and education.
- What anesthesia that the dentist can use to help you feel more comfortable and relaxed during a procedure.
- If the dentist has arrangements for handling patient emergencies that occur outside office hours.
- Whether the dentist provides information about payment plans and fees before beginning treatment.
- How the dentist’s office handles missed appointments.
- If the dentist is covered under your health plan.
- If the dentist provides the services you want or need, such as minimally invasive dentistry, sedation dentistry, pediatric dentistry or ADA compliant offices.
Often, a good way to narrow down your search is to ask family and friends for recommendations. You can also ask your pharmacy or your general care doctor, or you can receive a recommendation from a doctor you saw previously. The ADA has a list of dental societies at www.ada.org at the local and state level.
