As a parent, visiting your general dentist in Aurora, CO can be nerve racking. Will your child have a cavity? Will you need to pay for another costly filling? Luckily, the vast majority of periodontal issues can be prevented and are even reversible if caught early enough. Of course in order to have healthy gums and teeth, you’ll need to teeth your kids to have great oral hygiene. How can you do that?

Encourage Healthy Hygiene Habits

There are four pillars of quality dental hygiene:

  • Brushing: You probably already know about brushing twice a day (morning and night), but have you taught your child how to brush properly? Make sure the brush all tooth surfaces, not just the front.
  • Timing: Grab a fun timer your child will love and start enforcing a 2-3 minute brush time.
  • Flossing: Encourage your child to floss gently and regularly. Once a day is perfect!
  • Dental check-ups: These will help you catch potential issues early and keep plaque under control.

Monitor Their Diet

All children love a good snack, but not all snacks are great for their teeth. Fresh fruits and veggies are always a great idea. However, leave the sugary candies and other snacks for the holiday season. Additionally, try to incorporate great sources of calcium like dairy and low-fat cheese. If you child is lactose intolerant, consider a daily calcium vitamin. Lastly, if you are going to cut out sugary foods, do the same with sugary drinks. Replace soda and juice with a tall glass of water to minimize food-based acids eating away at enamel.
