Many people will develop misalignments in their teeth at some point in their lives. There are a variety of ways to fix this. While most people’s first thoughts will turn toward orthodontics, it is also possible to correct the issue with dental veneers. Orthodontic treatments certain have their advantages, but you should talk to our dentist in Nashville, TN to see if veneers are a good fit for you.

How Do Veneers Work?

A veneer is a thin shell of porcelain designed to cover up aesthetic issues with a tooth. In addition to covering up misalignments, veneers can also hide chips, cracks and small gaps. Before placing veneers, our dentist will first need to prepare the tooth by removing a small amount of enamel. Typically, ½ millimeter of enamel needs to go away. This is done to ensure the veneer does not protrude past the other teeth.

During the next visit, the veneer is bonded into place. It is permanently cemented on to the tooth, and our dentist will alter the shading to ensure the color matches with the rest of your teeth. You will need to return to our office in a couple weeks to make sure your gum tissue responds well to the restoration.

Are Veneers Preferable Over Orthodontics?

No treatment is inherently better than another. It simply comes down to which one is preferable for the specific patient. When it comes to orthodontics, they can take between one and two years to correct misalignment, and adults may be self-conscious about having braces for such a long period of time.

Dental veneers offer results in almost no time. They’re great for correcting mild misalignments. Since the veneers are made to look like the rest of your teeth, no one will know you even have restorations.
