If a tooth is severely decayed and you and your dentist have decided the best course of action is to be fitted for a crown, this has traditionally taken several weeks to complete the procedure. In the past, patients would come to the dentist to have the tooth prepared and to have a temporary crown placed. The dentist would then send the impression taken of the tooth to the lab for a crown to be made, and in two weeks, the patient would return to have the permanent crown placed.
Now, advances in dental technology have made it possible for patients to benefit from same day dental crowns. This is possible because of CEREC® technology, an option that allows patients to simplify dental treatment and limit the visits required to the dentist and get same-day dental restorations.
How Does It Work?
The CEREC® machine allows the dentist to place a crown on the patient in one single day. The tooth is prepared in the same way it is for traditional crowns, but a cone-beam camera is used to create a 3-D image of the crown area rather than a mold. Once the dentist has a digital image, the crown is created on-site utilizing state-of-the-art Computer Aided Design (CAD) dental technology and shortly after being created will be attached to the site. Because wearing a temporary crown for several weeks can be uncomfortable and they rarely look the same as your other teeth, same day crowns offer an almost immediate solution to a serious dental problem.
What Are the Benefits?
As with most treatments, you want to know the benefits and if they outweigh the risks. Same day crowns give you a new smile on the same day, save you time and money, are placed with a non-invasive procedure and are designed to decrease the discomfort that comes from having a crown placed.
