In days past, when you needed dental crowns you had to visit a dentist, have impressions of the affected tooth taken, and have the impressions sent to the lab for the crown to be fabricated. You were fitted with a temporary crown to tide you over, and possibly weeks later, you were able to return to the dentist and have the new crown placed on your tooth. Today, CEREC® dental crowns are designed to cut this entire process into a single visit.

How It Works

CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. It utilizes computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology to construct and produce ceramic restorations in just a single appointment. The process begins when Dr. Perrotta creates digital impressions of the teeth from one or more scans. She then uses CEREC software to take these scans and create a virtual model of the affected tooth and the surrounding teeth. After that, our dentists are able to design the restoration using CAD, during which a 3D model is created. Once that is complete, the doctor can then use CAM technology to mill the restoration from a solid piece of ceramic, tooth-colored material. The entire milling process usually takes anywhere from 6 to 15 minutes. The crown can then be adhered to the affected tooth as if it was a traditional, lab-fabricated crown.

Why It Matters

Patients who choose CEREC can name many advantages to the treatment, but time is often one of the greatest. Being able to keep treatment to a single office visit means that patients spend less time worrying about their oral health and dealing with dietary limitations and discomfort from a temporary crown.
