Have you been suffering from headaches or migraines, while also experiencing pain or restricted movement in the jaw area? If so, you may have a disorder called TMJ. Dr. Ghina Morad, a dentist in San Carlos, CA who specializes in treating TMJ, offers migraine treatment to give relief from symptoms.

What is TMJ?

Temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMJ, is a localized pain disorder. It is characterized by symptoms such as chronic headaches or migraines; jaw pain, locking or clicking; and pain in the shoulder, back or neck. Many patients also experience limited range of mobility in the mouth, making it difficult to chew or eat.

The causes of TMJ vary from person to person, but often involve bruxism, which is grinding or clenching of the teeth. Other causes include damaged joints or misalignment of the teeth.

How is TMJ Treated?

TMJ can be a devastating condition which drastically impacts your quality of life. Luckily, many treatments are available for this disorder. They include:

  • Disclusion Time Reduction Therapy – DTR is an innovative therapy which uses the BioEMG muscle activity tracer in conjunction with the Tekscan® digital bite analyzer to precisely determine the origin of TMJ pain. Slight adjustments are then made to the surface of the teeth to produce an even bite.
  • Bite Realignment – Crowns, orthodontic treatment or bonding help bring the bite back into alignment. This treatment reduces bruxism.
  • BOTOX® Injections – Used in more severe cases, these injections are made directly into the jaw muscles. They seek to relax the area and reduce headaches.
  • NTI Splints – These occlusal guards restrict bruxism and reduce the frequency of migraines. They are often used for mild cases.
