Before you know it, gingivitis can turn to serious periodontal disease that does more than wreak havoc on your mouth. Studies also suggest that there is a link between your oral health, heart disease and diabetes as well as other systems throughout the body. Fortunately, there is treatment available for those with advanced gum recession that is a result of advanced periodontal disease.

What Is the Pinhole Surgical Technique?

During traditional gum recession treatments, donor tissue from the patient’s mouth or soft tissue is grafted into the gum line to rebuild it. After suturing, the soft tissue then joins the existing gum tissue and grows together over time. The Pinhole Surgical Technique allows Dr. Amato to treat gum recession without a scalpel or sutures.

During the procedure, the doctor makes a small hole in the existing gum tissue with a needle. Through this small hole, also called a pinhole, the gum tissue is gently loosened by special tools and instruments. This expands the gum line and allows it to cover and root structure that has been exposed. The procedure basically involves moving the existing gum tissue to spots where it is more effective to treat gum recession.

What Are the Benefits?

There are many benefits of choosing the pinhole surgical technique in Monroe, CT, including:

  • Minimally invasive procedure with no cuts, scalpels or suturing
  • Faster recovery and less discomfort after treatment
  • Donor tissue is not required from other places in the patient’s mouth
  • Results are long-lasting and natural-looking

While gum recession can be bad on its own, many shy away from treatment because they fear the complications and risks that often come with surgery. At Advanced Periodontics and Dental Implants Center of Connecticut, we are happy to discuss the risks and rewards with both types of treatment to help you determine which works for your individual situation. Give us a call today to schedule an appointment with Dr. Amato.
