During traditional gum recession treatments, donor tissue from the patient’s mouth or soft tissue is grafted into the gum line to rebuild it. After suturing, the soft tissue then joins the existing gum tissue and grows together over time. The Pinhole Surgical Technique allows Dr. Amato to treat gum recession without a scalpel or sutures.
During the procedure, the doctor makes a small hole in the existing gum tissue with a needle. Through this small hole, also called a pinhole, the gum tissue is gently loosened by special tools and instruments. This expands the gum line and allows it to cover and root structure that has been exposed. The procedure basically involves moving the existing gum tissue to spots where it is more effective to treat gum recession.
