National Taffy Day is coming up on May 23rd. This is a great opportunity to appreciate this uniquely American snack. Like all sweet treats, taffy should be enjoyed in moderation if you want to maintain good oral health and avoid cavities, but you can still savor a few pieces without guilt.  Here’s what you need to know to celebrate National Taffy Day.

History of Taffy

Salt water taffy was first sold in New Jersey in the 1880’s. It’s traditionally associated with beach resort town were soft and chewy rounds of candy were sold from stands along the boardwalk. Taffy was popular as a souvenir because it could be kept for a long time without spoiling. Made from a simple combination of sugar, butter, and various colors and flavors, taffy is a super simple candy that comes in endless variations.

Sharing Taffy with Friends

Taffy is traditionally sold in rounds about the size of a quarter, individually wrapped in waxed paper.  This makes it the ideal snack for sharing with a group. Though all types of taffy are made from the same basic recipe, various types of food coloring and flavor syrup are added as the taffy is being pulled, making for endless variations.

Taffy and Oral Health

Because it’s sticky, gooey and packed with sugar, eating taffy can be tough for individuals with braces like six month smiles. If you plan to eat taffy while wearing braces, make sure to brush and floss right afterward. It’s much easier to enjoy taffy if you have an alternative teeth straightening device such as Invisilagn®.
